How PayPal cases move from inquiry to chargeback
A buyer usually starts with a dispute in PayPal, which works like an inquiry. You and the buyer can message each other and settle it. If it is not resolved, the buyer can escalate it to a claim and PayPal decides. When the buyer paid by card and goes to their bank instead, the issuer files a chargeback and PayPal handles it with the bank, using the evidence you provide. Each stage has its own response window set by PayPal, and NoChargeback shows it on every case.
What NoChargeback reads from PayPal
-
Dispute cases with their stage, reason, amount, status and the date your response is due.
-
The disputed transaction, with payer details, funding source and the item or invoice it covers.
-
Shipping data, including the address on the transaction and any tracking you added.
-
The message thread between you and the buyer inside the case.
-
Order, delivery and usage data from your store or app, when that account is connected too.
Permissions for the PayPal connection
You connect your PayPal business account and approve the access shown on the consent screen. We ask for read access to disputes, transactions and shipping details, and write access only to dispute actions such as providing evidence and sending case messages. We do not request permission to send payments, issue refunds or withdraw funds, so NoChargeback cannot move money in your PayPal balance. You can revoke the connection at any time in your PayPal settings. More detail is on the security page.
Which PayPal dispute data we ingest
-
Cases at the inquiry stage, while you can still resolve the problem directly with the buyer.
-
Claims escalated to PayPal for a decision.
-
Card chargebacks that reach PayPal from the buyer's bank.
-
Reasons such as item not received, item not as described, unauthorized transaction, duplicate or incorrect amount, credit not processed and canceled recurring billing.
-
Seller and buyer messages on each case, so your evidence shows every attempt to help.
PayPal evidence we prepare
The evidence PayPal accepts depends on the case reason and stage, so NoChargeback prepares what the case asks for and attaches it as the API allows.
| Evidence field | What we put there |
|---|---|
| Tracking information | Carrier and tracking number for each shipment on the order |
| Proof of delivery | Delivery confirmation, signature records or download and login logs for digital goods |
| Proof of refund | Refund reference and date when the buyer was already refunded |
| Notes | The drafted rebuttal letter matched to the reason, in plain language |
| Documents | Receipt, policy screenshots, product description and order timeline |
For unauthorized transaction claims, the letter points to matching addresses, earlier undisputed payments from the same buyer and usage after the purchase. Read more on friendly fraud prevention.

How the deadline countdown and submission work
Every PayPal case shows its response due date with a live countdown. On Growth and higher plans automatic submission is on, by default 48 hours before the due date, and you can change the window or pause it per case. On Starter you review and submit manually with one click. Cases at the inquiry stage also show the buyer's latest message, because a quick reply or partial refund often closes a case before it becomes a claim.
Plan availability for PayPal
PayPal is available on every plan. Starter connects 1 account, Growth up to 5 across Stripe, Shopify, PayPal and Braintree, Scale up to 20 and Enterprise up to 100. See all integrations.
What is the difference between a PayPal dispute and a PayPal chargeback?
A dispute is opened by the buyer inside PayPal and can be escalated to a claim that PayPal decides. A chargeback is filed by the buyer's card issuer, and PayPal responds to the bank with your evidence.
Can NoChargeback refund PayPal buyers?
No. The connection asks for read access plus dispute actions only. It cannot send payments, issue refunds or withdraw funds from your PayPal account.
Does adding tracking to PayPal help win item not received cases?
Yes. Tracking that shows delivery to the address on the transaction is the core evidence for item not received cases, and NoChargeback adds it to each case from your fulfillment data.
