What Ethoca alerts are and where they come from
Ethoca is a Mastercard company that connects card issuers with merchants. When a cardholder calls their bank or taps "I don't recognize this" in a banking app, the issuer can share that report through the Ethoca network. The merchant receives an alert with the card details, amount, date and descriptor of the payment.
The point of the alert is timing. It arrives after the cardholder complains but before the bank turns the complaint into a formal chargeback. That gap gives you a chance to resolve the case yourself.
Ethoca covers issuers across several card brands, with the strongest reach on Mastercard. For Visa transactions, the matching programs are Verifi CDRN and Visa rapid dispute resolution, which NoChargeback also includes on the same plans.
How a refund before the chargeback works
When an Ethoca alert arrives, you have a short window to act. The usual steps look like this.
-
The alert lands in your NoChargeback feed with the amount, card details, descriptor and the matched order when we can find it.
-
You check the order. If it was already refunded or canceled, you mark it so the issuer knows.
-
If the order is valid but not worth fighting, you refund it in full. The issuer is told the case is resolved.
-
If you believe the order is valid and you want to keep it, you decline to refund and prepare evidence for the dispute that may follow.
A refunded order still costs you the sale. It does not cost you a chargeback fee, and in most cases it does not count as a chargeback toward your monthly ratio. For many merchants that is the main reason to use Ethoca alerts: they protect the account as much as the revenue.
Consumer Clarity and why it helps
Many disputes are not fraud at all. The cardholder simply does not recognize a charge on the statement, often because the descriptor is short or the purchase was made by a family member. Ethoca Consumer Clarity addresses this by showing order details, such as the store name, items and date, inside the cardholder's banking app or to the bank agent on the phone.
When the cardholder sees what they bought, many decide not to dispute. That is a dispute that never reaches the alert stage. NoChargeback supplies order data from your connected accounts so it can be shared through these programs on Scale and Enterprise, together with Visa Order Insight data for Visa cards.
Auto resolve rules for Ethoca alerts
Reviewing every alert by hand works at low volume. At higher volume you need rules. In NoChargeback you set your own rules for network alerts, for example:
-
Refund every alert under a set amount
-
Refund alerts for a product with a high dispute rate
-
Never refund alerts for orders already shipped with tracking
-
Send alerts above a set amount to a person for review
Rules are opt in and off by default. They only act on your own account, and you can turn them off at any time. NoChargeback never issues refunds unless you have set a rule that says so.
Ethoca alerts without a per alert fee
Ethoca alerts are often sold by resellers with a fee for every alert, so your bill rises when dispute pressure rises. NoChargeback includes network alerts in the plan.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Alerts per month | Ethoca alerts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 49 USD | 24 USD | 100 | Not included |
| Growth | 299 USD | 149 USD | 1,000 | Not included |
| Scale | 799 USD | 399 USD | 5,000 | Included |
| Enterprise | 1,999 USD | 999 USD | 20,000 | Included |
Network alerts count toward the same monthly alert limit as early fraud warnings and inquiries. Paying yearly saves 50 percent. Starter and Growth still get processor alerts such as early fraud warnings and inquiries, described on the chargeback alerts page.
Ethoca, Verifi CDRN and Visa RDR side by side
| Program | Network focus | When it fires | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethoca alerts | Mastercard, plus other issuers in the network | After the cardholder complains, before the chargeback | Refund, cancel or decline |
| Verifi CDRN | Visa | After the cardholder complains, before the chargeback | Refund, cancel or decline |
| Visa RDR | Visa | When the issuer starts a dispute | Rules resolve it automatically by your settings |
| Consumer Clarity and Order Insight | Mastercard and Visa | When the cardholder asks about a charge | Order details shown to the cardholder |
Most merchants who sell to cardholders on both networks benefit from using all of them. On Scale and Enterprise, they arrive in one feed with one set of rules.
What are Ethoca alerts
Ethoca alerts are notices from the Ethoca network, owned by Mastercard, that a cardholder has reported a payment as fraud or disputed it with their bank. They arrive before a chargeback is filed, so the merchant can refund or cancel the order and avoid the chargeback.
Does a refunded Ethoca alert count as a chargeback
In most cases no, a refund made in response to an alert resolves the case before a chargeback is filed. Network rules and acquirer reporting can vary, so check with your acquirer how it counts these cases.
Which NoChargeback plans include Ethoca alerts
Ethoca alerts are included in the Scale and Enterprise plans. Starter and Growth include processor alerts such as early fraud warnings, inquiries and new disputes.
Do I pay a fee for each Ethoca alert
No, NoChargeback includes network alerts in the flat plan price. Scale includes 5,000 alerts a month and Enterprise includes 20,000.
Will NoChargeback refund alerts without asking me
No, refunds only happen through rules you create yourself. Rules are opt in, off by default, and limited to your own account.
What is Ethoca Consumer Clarity
Consumer Clarity is an Ethoca service that shows order details to the cardholder in their banking app or to the bank agent. When the cardholder recognizes the purchase, the dispute often stops before it starts.
