What Mastercard reason code 4859 means
4859 grouped three different claims. An addendum dispute challenges a separate charge made after the main transaction, such as hotel minibar items, car rental damage or fuel. A no show dispute challenges a fee charged when the guest did not arrive for a guaranteed booking. An ATM dispute claims cash was not dispensed, which concerns banks rather than merchants. For merchants, the first two now generally arrive as 4853 with a matching sub case, and the evidence is the same under either label.
Typical triggers for a 4859 chargeback
-
A hotel, rental or travel company adds charges after checkout that the guest did not expect.
-
Damage fees charged without photos or a signed condition report.
-
A no show fee on a reservation the guest says they canceled in time.
-
A cancellation policy that was not shown clearly at booking.
Time limits for Mastercard 4859
The cardholder typically has 120 days from the disputed charge to file. Your response window is set by your processor and is much shorter, often 7 to 21 days at Stripe. Collect folios and booking logs as soon as the alert arrives.
Evidence that wins a 4859 dispute
-
The signed rental agreement or registration card where the customer authorized later charges.
-
An itemized folio or invoice for each added charge, with dates and amounts.
-
Damage photos, repair estimates and the condition report signed at pickup and return.
-
The booking confirmation showing the guaranteed reservation and the cancellation policy.
-
Proof the policy was accepted at booking and that no cancellation was received before the deadline.
-
Communication with the customer about the added charge or the no show fee.
What to avoid when you respond
-
Do not charge damage without documentation collected at the time.
-
Do not rely on a policy hidden in general terms. Show the exact text the customer saw.
-
Do not charge more than one night for a no show unless your accepted policy states it.
-
Do not refund after the chargeback is filed, since the funds are already withdrawn.

How 4859 appears in Stripe
4859 has no single Stripe reason. Stripe usually shows these disputes under general, and some appear as product_unacceptable or credit_not_processed depending on what the issuer reported. The raw code is always in the network reason code field on the dispute. NoChargeback reads it, applies the addendum or no show evidence checklist and fills the Stripe fields. See Stripe chargeback protection.
Rebuttal letter opening for Mastercard 4859
We are responding to the dispute filed under Mastercard reason code 4859. The disputed amount is a valid charge authorized by the cardholder: the agreement signed at the start of the stay or rental permits later charges for the items listed, and the itemized invoice and supporting records were sent to the cardholder before the charge was posted. The signed agreement, invoice and photos are attached below.
Is Mastercard 4859 still used?
Mastercard generally handles addendum and no show disputes under 4853 today. Some processors and older reports still show 4859, and the evidence is the same under both labels.
Can I charge a no show fee without a chargeback risk?
Only when the booking was guaranteed, the cancellation policy was shown and accepted, and no cancellation arrived before the deadline. Keep proof of all three.
Do ATM disputes affect online merchants?
No. ATM disputes are between the cardholder's bank and the ATM operator, so merchants deal only with the addendum and no show parts of 4859.
