What Mastercard reason code 4870 means
4870 is a fraud chargeback for in person payments. When a chip card is copied onto a counterfeit magnetic stripe and swiped at a terminal without chip support, or with chip support switched off, the party with the weaker technology carries the loss. If your terminal read the chip, or the card had no chip, the shift does not apply. Online and card not present sales do not use this code; those fraud claims use codes such as 4837.
Typical triggers for a 4870 chargeback
-
A magnetic stripe only terminal, or a chip reader that is broken or disabled.
-
Staff swiping a chip card instead of inserting it.
-
Fallback to magnetic stripe after a chip read error, without a fresh chip attempt.
-
Key entered card numbers at a counter when the card was present.
-
Counterfeit cards used at pop up, event or mobile locations with older readers.
Time limits for Mastercard 4870
The cardholder typically has 120 days from the transaction date to dispute. Your response window is set by your processor and is much shorter, often 7 to 21 days. Pull terminal logs early, because some terminal providers keep detailed data only for a limited time.
Evidence that defends a 4870 dispute
-
Terminal logs showing the chip was read, with the point of sale entry mode for the transaction.
-
The authorization record showing chip data was sent to the issuer.
-
Proof the card had no chip, if the authorization data shows that.
-
A receipt with chip indicators such as the application ID and cryptogram data.
-
Records proving the terminal was chip capable and chip enabled on that date.
What to avoid when you respond
-
Do not argue the customer was present or showed ID. Under 4870 that does not reverse the liability shift.
-
Do not submit a generic receipt without entry mode data.
-
Do not refund after the chargeback is filed, since the funds are already withdrawn.
-
Do not keep using a reader that falls back to swipe after a single failed chip attempt.
How to prevent Mastercard 4870 chargebacks
-
Use certified chip readers at every location, including mobile and event setups.
-
Train staff to insert chip cards and never to swipe or key enter a card that is present.
-
Watch for repeated fallback transactions on one terminal, a sign of a faulty reader.
-
Accept contactless payments, which use the chip and carry the same protection.
-
Monitor your fraud levels against Mastercard thresholds with the chargeback ratio monitor.
How 4870 appears in Stripe
Stripe usually shows 4870 disputes with the reason fraudulent. The raw code is always in the network reason code field on the dispute. For Stripe Terminal and other in person charges, NoChargeback reads the card present details recorded on the charge, including the read method, and attaches them to the evidence. See Stripe chargeback protection.
Rebuttal letter opening for Mastercard 4870
We are responding to the dispute filed under Mastercard reason code 4870. The chip liability shift does not apply to this transaction: the card was read by its chip on a certified chip enabled terminal, and the authorization request carried full chip data to the issuer, as shown in the entry mode and cryptogram details attached below.
Does Mastercard 4870 apply to online sales?
No. 4870 covers card present transactions only. Card not present fraud claims use other codes, such as 4837 or 4863.
Can I win 4870 if my terminal swiped the card?
Usually not, if the card had a chip and was swiped, because the liability shift applies. Your defense is proof that the chip was read or that the card had no chip.
Does contactless count as a chip transaction?
Yes. Contactless card payments use the chip and generate chip data, so they generally carry the same protection against this chargeback.
