Why digital sellers carry a high chargeback risk
Online courses, ebooks, templates, software licenses and memberships share three traits that attract disputes. Delivery is instant and invisible to the bank, so "I never received it" sounds believable. Prices are often impulse level, so buyers regret purchases and dispute instead of asking for a refund. And fraudsters like digital products because there is no shipping address to check.
The result is a chargeback ratio that climbs faster than in physical retail. Visa VAMP treats US merchants above 1.5 percent, with at least 1,500 counted cases, as excessive, and Mastercard ECM flags merchants at 1.5 percent with at least 100 chargebacks a month. Above those lines, processors add reserves, fines or close the account. For a digital seller, losing the merchant account can stop all revenue in a day.
The reason codes digital sellers see most
| Reason code | What the customer claims | Evidence that wins |
|---|---|---|
| Visa 10.4 Card absent fraud | They did not make the purchase | 3D Secure, IP and device match, Compelling Evidence 3.0 history, access after purchase |
| Visa 13.1 Merchandise not received | They never got access | Account creation, login and download logs, delivery email with status |
| Visa 13.3 Not as described | The content was not what was promised | Sales page, curriculum or file list, progress through the content, refund policy |
| Visa 13.7 Canceled merchandise | They canceled before access | Purchase time versus first access, refund policy accepted at checkout |
| Mastercard 4853 Cardholder dispute | Not received or not as described | Same proof as the matching Visa code |

Access logs and download proof
A digital product is delivered when the customer can use it, and your platform records the moment they do. NoChargeback collects those records into a clear timeline for the issuer.
-
Account creation time, IP address and email verification.
-
The delivery email with the access link, and its delivery status.
-
Every login after purchase, with IP address, device and browser.
-
Lessons or modules opened, progress percentage and time spent.
-
Files downloaded, with file name, time and IP address.
-
License keys activated, and the device they were activated on.
-
Terms and refund policy accepted at checkout, with version and time.
When the IP address and device of the downloads match the purchase, the letter says so in plain words. That match is the strongest answer to both "not received" and "fraud" claims.
Ethoca alerts and Visa RDR rules on Scale
Some disputes are cheaper to stop than to fight. Pre dispute network alerts give you that choice before a chargeback is filed.
-
Ethoca alerts (Mastercard) notify you when a cardholder contacts their bank, so you can refund and cancel access before the dispute posts.
-
Verifi CDRN (Visa) works the same way for Visa cardholders at participating issuers.
-
Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) applies rules you set, such as refund every dispute under 30 USD, and resolves matching cases automatically so they do not count as chargebacks.
-
Order Insight shares order details with the issuer when the cardholder asks about a charge, which often ends the inquiry.
You choose the rules: maximum amount, reason codes and products. Rules stay off until you enable them and act only on your own account. Network alerts, RDR rules and Order Insight are included in Scale and Enterprise.
Keep your chargeback ratio under the line
NoChargeback computes your ratio for each account and each network every day, using disputes plus early fraud warnings as an approximation of what Visa counts. You get an email at 70 percent and again at 90 percent of each threshold, so there is time to tighten 3D Secure, pause a risky traffic source or turn on RDR rules before your processor sends a warning.
Prevention for digital products
-
Require 3D Secure on first purchases from new devices or high risk BINs.
-
Deliver access by email immediately, so the customer has a record in their inbox.
-
Show the refund policy next to the buy button and record acceptance.
-
Use a statement descriptor with your product name and a support address.
-
Refund on early fraud warnings when a refund costs less than the expected chargeback.
Course and membership businesses that bill monthly should also read chargeback protection for SaaS, since renewals bring canceled recurring disputes.
Which plan fits a digital seller
Growth fits a seller with up to 100 disputes a month who wants automatic submission and prevention rules, for 299 USD a month or 149 USD a month billed yearly. Scale adds Ethoca and Verifi alerts, RDR rules, Compelling Evidence 3.0 data, up to 400 disputes and 5,000 alerts a month and up to 20 accounts, for 799 USD a month or 399 USD billed yearly. Sellers running several storefronts can read about chargeback management for multiple merchant accounts. See every plan on the pricing page.
How do I prove delivery of a digital product?
Show that the customer created an account, received the access email and then logged in, opened content or downloaded files from an IP address and device that match the purchase. NoChargeback puts these records in a timeline.
What is Visa RDR?
Rapid Dispute Resolution is a Visa program that applies your own refund rules to disputes before they become chargebacks. Matching disputes are resolved with a refund and do not count toward your chargeback ratio.
Are Ethoca alerts included in the price?
Yes, on Scale and Enterprise. There is no separate fee per alert. Alerts count toward the monthly alert limit of your plan.
Will RDR refund customers without my approval?
Only within rules you create and turn on. You set the maximum amount, reason codes and products, and you can switch rules off at any time.
What chargeback ratio is too high for a digital seller?
Visa VAMP treats US merchants above 1.5 percent, with at least 1,500 counted cases, as excessive, and Mastercard ECM flags 1.5 percent with at least 100 chargebacks. NoChargeback alerts you at 70 and 90 percent of those thresholds.
