What Stripe Smart Disputes does and where it stops
Smart Disputes is Stripe's built in dispute response. When an eligible card dispute arrives, Stripe emails you, builds an evidence packet from its internal data, your transaction data and cardholder data, tailors it to the dispute reason and submits it just before the deadline if you take no action. There is nothing to integrate.
The fee is 30 percent of the disputed amount on each dispute you win. Lost disputes carry no Smart Disputes fee. In the US the 15 USD fee for receiving a dispute still applies, and the 15 USD counter fee is waived when Smart Disputes submits the response.
Three limits matter once your volume grows.
-
Stripe picks the disputes. Its documentation says eligibility depends on the reason code, payment method, availability and relevance of evidence, and cost. Disputes that fail that test land back on your desk with the clock running.
-
The packet only holds what Stripe has. Carrier delivery scans, login and usage logs from your app, support emails and the terms a customer accepted live outside Stripe. For "product not received" and subscription disputes, that missing evidence is often what decides the case.
-
Stripe is clear that you are responsible for the accuracy of what is shared and that it does not guarantee results, because the issuing bank decides. You can respond yourself or accept the dispute instead, and you can switch auto submission off in your dispute settings, but then the work is yours again.

NoChargeback is not insurance and does not move money. It reads your Stripe data and writes dispute responses, nothing else. It does not sell card network alerts such as Ethoca, Verifi CDRN or Visa RDR.
What the 30 percent fee costs against a flat plan
This is list price arithmetic for an average disputed order of 120 USD, not a promise of results. The 15 USD received fee is the same under every option, so it is left out.
| Won disputes a month | Recovered | Smart Disputes fee | NoChargeback Growth billed yearly | NoChargeback Growth billed monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 360 USD | 108 USD | 149 USD | 299 USD |
| 10 | 1,200 USD | 360 USD | 149 USD | 299 USD |
| 25 | 3,000 USD | 900 USD | 149 USD | 299 USD |
At three wins a month Smart Disputes is cheaper, and that is the honest answer for a small store. At ten wins the yearly Growth plan costs 211 USD a month less. At twenty five wins the gap is 751 USD a month, about 9,000 USD a year.
Two adjustments keep the comparison fair. When you counter outside Smart Disputes, Stripe charges the 15 USD counter fee and refunds it only on a win, so add 15 USD for each dispute you counter and lose. And the break even moves with order value: 30 percent equals 149 USD at about 497 USD of monthly recoveries and 299 USD at about 997 USD. A store selling 400 USD orders crosses the first line with two wins. The month by month cost at three store sizes, with losses included, is in Stripe Smart Disputes pricing, and every plan limit is on the pricing page.
When Smart Disputes is the better choice
-
You win only a few disputes a month and your orders are small, so 30 percent of the wins stays under any monthly plan.
-
Most of your disputes are card fraud claims, where Stripe's own data such as 3D Secure results and device signals is most of the evidence.
-
You want nothing connected to Stripe except Stripe, and you accept that some disputes will not be eligible.
-
Nobody on your team has time to glance at evidence before it goes out, even once a week.
If that describes you, keep Smart Disputes and come back when the monthly fee starts to look like a salary line.
What a Stripe merchant gets with NoChargeback
-
Every dispute answered. NoChargeback imports each dispute from your connected Stripe accounts, including the ones Smart Disputes would skip, and builds an evidence pack for its exact reason code.
-
Letters built from facts. The rebuttal letter states only what is in the Stripe data and what you add, such as a tracking number, account activity after the purchase or customer messages. Missing evidence is listed as missing, so you know what to attach before the deadline.
-
Submission on schedule. Growth and higher plans submit automatically 48 hours before the due date, and you decide which reason codes go out on their own. The full timeline is on Stripe dispute automation.
-
Warnings before disputes. Radar early fraud warnings, inquiries and new disputes reach you by email, and in Slack on Growth and above, with a view of whether a refund now costs less than the dispute that usually follows. See Stripe early fraud warnings.
-
Your ratio in view. The chargeback ratio monitor tracks Visa VAMP and Mastercard ECM per account, so a rising month shows up before your processor writes to you.
-
Narrow access. NoChargeback reads payment data and writes dispute responses. It cannot refund, charge or move money. The exact scope is on the Stripe integration page.
How to switch from Stripe Smart Disputes
- 1 Connect your Stripe account. It takes a few minutes and needs no developer.
- 2 Turn off Smart Disputes auto submission in your Stripe dispute settings, so Stripe and NoChargeback never both act on the same dispute.
- 3 Let NoChargeback import your open disputes and recent early fraud warnings, and check which of them Smart Disputes had marked eligible.
- 4 Pick the reason codes that should submit on their own and the ones you want to review, then add any evidence Stripe cannot see, such as delivery confirmations or usage logs.
- 5 Compare one full month of won amounts against what 30 percent would have cost, then choose the plan that fits your volume.
How much does Stripe Smart Disputes cost?
Stripe Smart Disputes costs 30 percent of the disputed amount for each dispute you win, and nothing on disputes you lose. In the US the 15 USD fee for receiving a dispute still applies, while the 15 USD counter fee is waived when Smart Disputes submits the response. A won 200 USD dispute returns 140 USD to you.
Is Stripe Smart Disputes worth it?
Smart Disputes is worth it when you win only a few small disputes a month and want no work at all. Once your monthly recoveries pass roughly 500 USD, 30 percent of them costs more than a flat 149 USD plan, and the gap grows with every extra win and with higher order values.
Can I turn off Stripe Smart Disputes?
Yes. You can switch off automatic submission in the dispute settings of your Stripe Dashboard, and you can always respond to a single dispute manually or accept it before the due date. Turn it off before you connect another dispute tool, so only one system submits evidence for each dispute.
Which disputes are eligible for Smart Disputes?
Stripe decides eligibility dispute by dispute. Its documentation lists the reason code, the payment method, the availability and relevance of evidence, and cost as the factors, and Smart Disputes covers card disputes only. Disputes that are not eligible stay with you to answer before the deadline.
Does Smart Disputes use my own evidence?
Mostly it uses what Stripe already holds, meaning Stripe's internal data, your transaction data and cardholder data. Delivery scans, app usage logs and support conversations outside Stripe are not part of the packet unless you respond yourself, which is why subscription and delivery disputes often need a different approach.
What is the best alternative to Stripe Smart Disputes?
For a Stripe merchant winning more than a handful of disputes a month, a flat priced tool that answers every dispute and lets you review the evidence. NoChargeback Growth covers five Stripe accounts and 100 disputes for 149 USD a month billed yearly, and you keep 100 percent of what you win.
