Why Stripe disputes slip through by hand
A Stripe dispute gives you a fixed window to respond, shown as the evidence due date on the dispute. If nothing is submitted by then, the dispute is lost by default, the money stays with the cardholder and the 15 USD dispute fee stays with Stripe.
Answering well takes time. Someone has to open the charge, find the customer record, check the 3D Secure result and the AVS and CVC checks, pull the invoice or subscription history, write a short argument for the reason code and paste it into the right evidence fields. Stripe accepts one final submission per dispute, so a rushed or half empty response cannot be fixed afterwards.
With three disputes a month that is an afternoon. With thirty spread across several Stripe accounts, cases go out late, go out thin or do not go out at all. That is the gap Stripe dispute automation closes.
How Stripe dispute automation works in NoChargeback
- 1 Connect Stripe with a restricted key. You tick read access on charges, payment intents, customers, invoices, subscriptions, early fraud warnings and balance transactions, plus write access on disputes only. No developer is needed and NoChargeback can never refund, charge or move money.
- 2 Import open disputes and inquiries. Every dispute in every status comes in with the Stripe reason, the card network reason code such as Visa 10.4 or Mastercard 4837, the amount and the evidence due date with a live countdown.
- 3 Get an evidence pack per dispute. NoChargeback builds the pack from your Stripe data and drafts a rebuttal letter for the exact reason code. The letter states only facts found in that data and lists missing evidence as missing, so you know what to attach before it goes out.
- 4 Submit on time. On Starter you submit with one click. On Growth and higher, packs with enough evidence are submitted automatically 48 hours before the due date, and you can hold, edit or switch off automatic submission at any time.
Which Stripe evidence fields get filled
Stripe's dispute form has separate fields for each kind of proof, and issuers read them differently by reason. NoChargeback fills the fields that match the dispute instead of dumping everything into one text box.
| Stripe dispute reason | Evidence NoChargeback puts forward |
|---|---|
| fraudulent | Customer name and email, purchase IP, billing address with AVS result, 3D Secure outcome, earlier payments from the same customer |
| subscription_canceled | Subscription start and renewal dates, cancellation policy and where it was shown, cancellation rebuttal, usage after the renewal |
| product_not_received | Shipping carrier, tracking number, ship date and address when they exist in your data, plus the receipt |
| product_unacceptable | Product description, refund policy and how it was disclosed, customer communication |
| credit_not_processed | Refund policy, refund refusal explanation, refund history on the customer |
| duplicate | The other charge ID and why both charges are valid |
| unrecognized and general | Receipt, product description, service date and access activity |
Anything Stripe does not hold, such as a tracking number, usage after the purchase or support messages, you add on the dispute page and the letter uses it. The full field list is on the Stripe integration page.
Stripe Dashboard, Smart Disputes and NoChargeback compared
| Stripe Dashboard by hand | Stripe Smart Disputes | NoChargeback | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who builds the evidence | You | Stripe, from Stripe's own data | NoChargeback, from your Stripe data, plus files you attach |
| Which disputes | Any you open | Card disputes Stripe marks as eligible, by reason code, payment method, evidence and cost | Every dispute and inquiry on connected accounts |
| Submission | Manual | Automatic just before the deadline unless you turn it off | Manual on Starter, automatic 48 hours before the due date on Growth and higher |
| Price | No tool fee | 30 percent of the disputed amount on each won dispute | Flat plan from 49 USD a month, Growth 149 USD a month billed yearly |
| Counter fee in the US | 15 USD, returned if you win | Waived | 15 USD, returned if you win |
| Several Stripe accounts in one view | No, one account at a time | No, per account | Yes, up to 5 on Growth, 20 on Scale and 100 on Enterprise |
| Ratio monitoring | No | No | Visa VAMP and Mastercard ECM monitor with warnings at 70 and 90 percent of the threshold |
| Best fit | A few disputes a year | A handful of small disputes a month on one account | Several disputes a week, or more than one Stripe account |
Smart Disputes is a good product and needs no setup. Its cost grows with every win, and it only answers what Stripe considers eligible. The cost math at three store sizes is in Stripe Smart Disputes pricing, and the side by side comparison with a switch checklist is on the Stripe Smart Disputes alternative page.
What Stripe dispute automation costs with NoChargeback
Every plan is a flat price on the pricing page. A dispute counts once an evidence pack is generated for it, and paying yearly halves the monthly price.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Stripe accounts | Disputes a month | Submission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 49 USD | 24 USD | 1 | 15 | Manual, one click |
| Growth | 299 USD | 149 USD | 5 | 100 | Automatic 48 hours before the due date |
| Scale | 799 USD | 399 USD | 20 | 400 | Automatic |
| Enterprise | 1,999 USD | 999 USD | 100 | 1,500 | Automatic |
A quick check against a success fee: at 30 percent, 149 USD equals about 497 USD of won disputes in a month. A store that wins five 100 USD disputes a month already pays more through a percentage than through Growth billed yearly, and every extra win widens the gap.
Who automates Stripe disputes with NoChargeback
-
SaaS and subscription companies on Stripe Billing, where most disputes are "subscription canceled" or "unrecognized" and the winning proof is renewal dates, terms acceptance and usage after the charge. See chargeback protection for SaaS subscriptions.
-
Online stores on Stripe, where "product not received" and friendly fraud cost more than stolen cards. See ecommerce chargeback protection.
-
Digital goods and course sellers, where download and login records decide the case. See digital goods.
-
Operators with several Stripe accounts, such as agencies, brands with one account per store and platforms, who need every due date in one list. See multi account operators.
Fewer Stripe disputes to answer in the first place
Automation is half the job. The cheaper dispute is the one that never gets filed.
-
Inquiries first. Stripe shows inquiries with the status warning_needs_response. Answering them with evidence can stop them from turning into a chargeback, and NoChargeback handles them with the same pack and countdown as disputes.
-
Early fraud warnings. When Stripe Radar flags a charge, NoChargeback alerts you by email or Slack so you can decide whether refunding now costs less than the dispute that usually follows. How that recommendation is worked out is on Stripe early fraud warning alerts, and alert rules sit in prevention rules, which are off until you turn them on.
-
Your ratio in view. The chargeback ratio monitor tracks Visa VAMP and Mastercard ECM so a bad month does not reach the card network programs unnoticed.
NoChargeback connects to Stripe only and does not sell card network alerts such as Ethoca, Verifi CDRN or Visa RDR.
Can Stripe disputes be automated?
Yes. Stripe lets you submit dispute evidence through its API and through Smart Disputes. A dispute automation tool connects with a restricted key, drafts the evidence for each dispute and submits it before the due date. NoChargeback does this for every dispute type and submits automatically 48 hours before the deadline on Growth and higher plans.
How does Stripe automatic dispute submission work?
With Smart Disputes, Stripe prefills an evidence packet for eligible disputes and submits it just before the dispute times out if you take no action. You can turn auto submit off in the Dashboard settings. Third party tools such as NoChargeback submit on their own schedule through the Stripe API instead.
How long do I have to respond to a Stripe dispute?
The deadline is the evidence due date shown on each dispute in the Stripe Dashboard and API, usually one to three weeks after the dispute opens depending on the card network. Missing it loses the dispute by default, which is why automation submits a set time before the due date rather than at the last minute.
What is the best Stripe dispute management software?
For a merchant with a few disputes a month, Stripe's own Smart Disputes is the simplest choice. For merchants with several disputes a week or more than one Stripe account, a flat priced tool that answers every reason code costs less. NoChargeback Growth covers 5 Stripe accounts and 100 disputes for 149 USD a month billed yearly.
Does Stripe dispute automation guarantee a win?
No. The card issuer makes the final decision on every dispute, and no software can promise the outcome. Automation makes sure each case goes out complete, matched to the reason code and on time, which removes the most common reasons merchants lose: no response, a late response and missing evidence.
Can NoChargeback refund my Stripe customers?
No. The restricted key asks for read access plus write access on disputes only. Refunds, charges, payouts and transfers are never requested, so NoChargeback cannot issue them. When a refund is the better move after an early fraud warning, you issue it yourself in Stripe.
