Why Stripe subscription disputes are lost
Subscription businesses lose disputes they should win for three reasons. The first is no response at all: a renewal of 29 USD does not feel worth an hour of work, so it sits until the evidence due date passes and the case is lost by default, along with the 15 USD dispute fee.
The second is the wrong evidence. A "subscription canceled" dispute needs the cancellation policy, where it was shown at signup and a rebuttal that explains why this payment is still valid. Merchants often paste a login screenshot into the general text box instead, and the issuer reads it as unrelated.
The third is repeat disputes. A customer who disputes one renewal often disputes the next two as well, because a dispute does not stop future charges by itself in Stripe Billing. Each one costs another fee and counts again against your Visa and Mastercard ratios, unless someone cancels the subscription or answers every case.
How NoChargeback answers a Stripe subscription dispute
- 1 Connect Stripe with a restricted key. Read access on charges, customers, invoices, subscriptions and early fraud warnings, plus write access on disputes only. NoChargeback cannot refund, charge or cancel anything.
- 2 See every subscription dispute with its due date. Each dispute shows the Stripe reason, the card network code such as Visa 13.2 or Mastercard 4841, the invoice it belongs to and a countdown to the evidence due date.
- 3 Get the evidence pack. NoChargeback reads the subscription start date, every renewal invoice, earlier undisputed payments from the same card and the customer record, then drafts a rebuttal for that exact reason. You add the usage log, your signup screen and any support emails on the dispute page.
- 4 Submit before the deadline. One click on Starter. On Growth and higher, packs with enough evidence go out automatically 48 hours before the due date, so a 29 USD renewal gets the same care as a 2,000 USD annual plan.
What evidence wins each subscription dispute reason
Stripe's evidence form has a separate field for each kind of proof. Issuers read them by reason, so the right field matters as much as the proof itself.
| Stripe reason | What the cardholder claims | Evidence that answers it | Stripe evidence fields |
|---|---|---|---|
| subscription_canceled | They cancelled and were still charged | Cancellation policy, where it was shown at signup, no cancel request before the renewal date, usage after the charge | cancellation_policy, cancellation_policy_disclosure, cancellation_rebuttal, access_activity_log |
| unrecognized | They do not recognize the charge | Receipt, statement descriptor, earlier paid invoices on the same card, account login after the charge | receipt, customer_email_address, access_activity_log, service_date |
| fraudulent | Someone else used their card | Matching email and billing address, 3D Secure result, AVS and CVC checks, earlier undisputed payments | customer_purchase_ip, billing_address, uncategorized_text |
| product_unacceptable | The service did not work as described | Product description, refund policy and disclosure, support messages | product_description, refund_policy, customer_communication |
| credit_not_processed | A promised refund never arrived | Refund policy and why this charge was not refundable, or proof the refund was issued | refund_policy, refund_refusal_explanation |
The card network codes behind these are Visa 13.2 (cancelled recurring transaction) and 10.4 (fraud), Mastercard 4841 (cancelled recurring or digital goods) and 4837 (no cardholder authorization), and American Express C28 (cancelled recurring billing). Each has its own page under chargeback reason codes, for example Visa 13.2 and Mastercard 4841.
Stripe Dashboard, Smart Disputes and NoChargeback for subscription disputes
| Stripe Dashboard by hand | Stripe Smart Disputes | NoChargeback | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes the response | You, per dispute | Stripe, from Stripe's own data | NoChargeback, from your Stripe Billing data plus files you add |
| Which disputes | Any you open | Card disputes Stripe marks as eligible | Every dispute and inquiry on connected accounts |
| Usage after the renewal | You find and paste it | Only what Stripe holds | You attach it once, it goes into the access activity field |
| Price | No tool fee | 30 percent of the disputed amount on each win | Flat plan from 49 USD a month, Growth 149 USD a month billed yearly |
| Earlier payments from the same customer | You look them up | From Stripe's data | Counted and listed in the letter as earlier undisputed payments |
| Best fit | A few disputes a year | A handful of small renewals a month | Several subscription disputes a week, or more than one Stripe account |
On a 29 USD monthly plan Smart Disputes takes about 8.70 USD per won case, which is cheap. On annual plans the math turns: a won 1,200 USD annual renewal costs 360 USD at 30 percent. The full cost comparison is on the Stripe Smart Disputes alternative page.
What answering Stripe subscription disputes costs
Every plan is a flat price on the pricing page, with no share of what you win back. Paying yearly halves the monthly price.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Stripe accounts | Disputes a month | Submission |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 49 USD | 24 USD | 1 | 15 | Manual, one click |
| Growth | 299 USD | 149 USD | 5 | 100 | Automatic 48 hours before the due date |
| Scale | 799 USD | 399 USD | 20 | 400 | Automatic |
| Enterprise | 1,999 USD | 999 USD | 100 | 1,500 | Automatic |
A worked example with hypothetical numbers: a SaaS company gets 12 subscription disputes a month at 99 USD each. Lost by default, that is 1,188 USD of revenue plus 180 USD in dispute fees. Winning half of them with complete evidence brings back 594 USD and the 15 USD counter fee on each win, against 24 USD a month for Starter billed yearly.
Who uses NoChargeback for Stripe subscription disputes
-
SaaS companies on Stripe Billing with monthly and annual plans, where "subscription canceled" and "unrecognized" are the top dispute reasons. The wider playbook is on chargeback protection for SaaS.
-
Membership sites, newsletters and course platforms that bill monthly and can show logins and lesson views after each renewal. See digital goods chargeback protection.
-
Subscription box brands on Stripe, where a renewal dispute often comes with a delivery question as well. See ecommerce chargeback protection.
-
Companies running several Stripe accounts for different products or regions, who need every due date in one list. See multi account operators.
Fewer subscription disputes before they start
The cheapest dispute is the one that never gets filed. Three things cut subscription disputes the most.
-
A clear statement descriptor. If the charge reads as your product name and a support URL, fewer customers report it as unrecognized.
-
A renewal reminder before annual charges, and a cancel button that works in one place. Visa requires notice before a free trial converts to a paid plan, and the same email doubles as evidence later.
-
Early fraud warnings acted on fast. When Stripe Radar flags a renewal, refunding it can cost less than the dispute that follows. NoChargeback sends the warning by email or Slack and shows the math on Stripe early fraud warning alerts.
NoChargeback works with Stripe only and does not sell card network alerts such as Ethoca, Verifi CDRN or Visa RDR.
What happens when a customer disputes a subscription payment on Stripe?
Stripe pulls the payment amount plus a 15 USD dispute fee from your balance and opens a dispute with an evidence due date, usually one to three weeks out. You can accept it or counter with evidence. The card issuer decides the outcome, and if you win, the money and the counter fee come back.
Does a dispute cancel a Stripe subscription?
No. A dispute does not cancel the subscription in Stripe Billing by itself, so the next renewal is still charged unless you cancel it. If the customer clearly wants out, cancel the subscription and still answer the open dispute if the charge was valid, so you do not collect a second dispute next month.
What evidence do I need for a subscription canceled dispute?
You need your cancellation policy, proof of where and when the customer saw it at signup, a rebuttal stating no cancellation was requested before the renewal (or why this charge was still due), and usage after the charge. Stripe has separate fields for each, and NoChargeback fills them from your Stripe Billing data.
How do I win a Stripe subscription dispute?
Answer before the due date, match the evidence to the reason code and keep it factual: signup terms, renewal invoice, cancellation history and logins after the charge. Missing the deadline or sending unrelated screenshots are the most common reasons merchants lose winnable subscription disputes.
Should I refund instead of fighting a subscription dispute?
Refunding after a dispute is filed does not close it or return the fee. Refund early instead, when you get an inquiry or a Radar early fraud warning, if the customer has not used the product. Fight when you can show agreement to recurring billing and use after the charge.
Can NoChargeback cancel subscriptions or issue refunds?
No. The restricted key has read access plus write access on disputes only. NoChargeback cannot cancel subscriptions, refund, charge or move money. You do those in Stripe, and NoChargeback answers the disputes.
