Why Stripe early fraud warnings get missed
Stripe Radar shows early fraud warnings on the payment page and sends a radar.early_fraud_warning.created webhook. Neither tells you what to do. Stripe itself says no action is required, so most teams leave the warning in the Dashboard and find out later, when the dispute arrives with a 15 USD fee, a 15 USD counter fee if you fight, and one more case on your Visa VAMP count.
Refunding every warning is not the answer either. Stripe's own analysis says refunding all of them is a poor strategy, because you will refund sales that never would have turned into a dispute. The right choice depends on the amount, the dispute fee, whether 3D Secure shifted liability and how close you are to a card network threshold. That is a calculation, and nobody wants to do it by hand at 11 pm for a 38 USD order.
How NoChargeback handles a Stripe early fraud warning
- 1 Connect Stripe with a restricted key. You give read access to charges, customers, early fraud warnings and balance transactions, plus write access to disputes only. NoChargeback can never refund, charge or move money.
- 2 Every new warning lands in one feed. NoChargeback reads the warning with its fraud type, the charge, the card network, the 3D Secure result and the customer, and marks whether it is still actionable. A warning is actionable while the charge has no dispute and is not fully refunded.
- 3 You get a recommendation. NoChargeback compares the refund amount with the expected cost of a chargeback: the chance the warning turns into a dispute, the order amount you would lose if the dispute is lost, the 15 USD dispute fee and the handling time. The alert says Refund advised or Keep the sale and prepare evidence, with both numbers shown.
- 4 You decide in Stripe. The alert opens the payment in your Stripe Dashboard. You refund or keep the sale, then record the decision in NoChargeback so the feed and your reports stay accurate.
- 5 If a dispute still opens, the same case moves into an evidence pack with a letter built from the facts in your Stripe data, ready before the due date.
When to refund a Stripe early fraud warning
Stripe's guidance is specific. All else equal, refunding makes sense when the payment is about the size of your dispute fee, and it is likely not worth it when the amount is more than 35 percent above the fee. With the US dispute fee at 15 USD, that rough line sits near 20 USD. NoChargeback starts from the same logic and adds what Stripe's rule of thumb leaves out: your win chance on that payment.
| Situation | What usually makes sense | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small payment, no 3D Secure | Refund now | The refund costs about the same as the dispute fee and keeps a dispute off your ratio |
| Larger payment, no 3D Secure | Keep the sale and prepare evidence | The expected chargeback cost is lower than giving back the full amount |
| Payment authenticated with 3D Secure | Usually keep the sale | Liability often shifts to the issuer and Stripe adds the 3DS data to the evidence |
| Charge already disputed or fully refunded | No action possible | The warning is no longer actionable |
| You are close to a Visa VAMP or Mastercard ECM threshold | Refund more often | One more dispute can cost more than the sale through fines and reserves |
| Digital goods already delivered and used | Keep the sale, gather usage logs | Login and download records are strong proof if a dispute opens |
Two Stripe details matter here. A refund does not remove the fraud report itself, and Visa counts fraud reports in VAMP. A refund only avoids the fraud report when it is processed as a reversal, which means within about two hours of capture. Track both in the chargeback ratio monitor.
Stripe Radar alone compared with NoChargeback alerts
| Stripe Radar and the Dashboard | NoChargeback | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the warning appears | Payment page, Radar reviews and a webhook | Live feed, email on every plan, Slack on Growth and higher |
| Recommendation | None, the warning needs no action | Refund advised or keep the sale, with the refund cost and expected chargeback cost side by side |
| 3D Secure and win chance | Shown on the payment | Used in the recommendation |
| Several Stripe accounts | One account at a time | Up to 5 accounts on Growth, 20 on Scale and 100 on Enterprise in one feed |
| When the dispute arrives | You build the evidence | Evidence pack and drafted letter from your Stripe data |
| Ratio view | Dispute rate per account | Visa VAMP and Mastercard ECM monitor with warnings at 70 and 90 percent of the threshold |
| Refunds | You refund in Stripe | You refund in Stripe, NoChargeback has no refund permission |
| Price | Included with Radar | Flat plan from 49 USD a month, no fee per warning |
Radar does the screening at checkout and it does it well. NoChargeback starts where Radar stops: after the payment went through and an issuer flagged it. If you are deciding which Radar tier to keep before Stripe's January 2027 price change, the cost at four volumes is in Stripe Radar Lite vs Standard pricing.
What Stripe early fraud warning alerts cost
Alerts are included in every plan. A Stripe early fraud warning or an inquiry counts as one alert, and you see an upgrade prompt at 80 percent of the limit.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Alerts a month | Disputes a month | Stripe accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 49 USD | 24 USD | 100 | 15 | 1 |
| Growth | 299 USD | 149 USD | 1,000 | 100 | 5 |
| Scale | 799 USD | 399 USD | 5,000 | 400 | 20 |
| Enterprise | 1,999 USD | 999 USD | 20,000 | 1,500 | 100 |
Compare that with pre dispute alert services that bill each alert separately, often 15 to 29 USD per alert. A store with 40 warnings a month pays 600 to 1,160 USD for those alerts alone, against 149 USD for Growth billed yearly. Full plan details are on the pricing page.
Who uses Stripe early fraud warning alerts
-
Online stores on Stripe that ship physical goods, where a stolen card order is gone once it leaves the warehouse. Catching the warning before the parcel ships is the cheapest outcome. See ecommerce chargeback protection.
-
SaaS and subscription companies on Stripe Billing, where card testing and stolen cards produce many small warnings on low price plans. Refunding those early protects the dispute ratio. See SaaS subscriptions.
-
Digital goods and course sellers, where the order is delivered in seconds and usage logs decide whether to refund or fight. See digital goods.
-
Operators with several Stripe accounts who need every warning from every account in one feed instead of logging in account by account. See multi account operators.
Alert rules for Stripe early fraud warnings
On Growth and higher you can add prevention rules to your own account, for example by alert type, maximum amount or fraud type. A rule can notify a person or Slack channel, or record a keep the sale decision for small categories you have decided not to refund. Rules never refund anything, are opt in and are off until you turn them on.
NoChargeback also watches patterns across warnings and fraud disputes, such as several cases from the same card BIN or issuing country, and suggests a Radar rule, a 3D Secure rule or a velocity limit you can add in Stripe.
NoChargeback works with Stripe only and does not connect to Ethoca, Verifi CDRN or Visa RDR. If you want those network alerts as well, the differences are explained in Ethoca vs Verifi CDRN vs RDR.
What is an early fraud warning on Stripe?
An early fraud warning is a fraud report that a card issuer sends to Visa, Mastercard or JCB about one of your payments, such as a Visa TC40 or a Mastercard SAFE report. Stripe passes it on through Radar and the API. It is not a dispute yet, but a fraud dispute often follows if you do nothing.
Does an early fraud warning mean a chargeback?
Not always. Stripe says about 40 percent of Visa and Mastercard early fraud warnings become fraud disputes when the payment is not refunded, and the rate varies by card network and amount. Payments covered by the 3D Secure liability shift can still be disputed, but Stripe adds the 3DS data as evidence for you.
Should I refund an early fraud warning?
Refund when the payment is small compared with the dispute fee or when you are close to a card network threshold. Stripe's analysis says refunding pays off when the amount is about the size of your dispute fee and rarely pays off above 35 percent more. NoChargeback runs this comparison on every warning and shows the result.
Does refunding an early fraud warning stop the dispute?
Stripe says a proactive refund can keep the cardholder from opening a dispute, because the money is already back on the card. It does not remove the fraud report, which still counts in Visa VAMP. Only a refund processed as a reversal, within about two hours of capture, avoids the fraud report.
Can I get Stripe early fraud warnings by email or Slack?
Stripe shows warnings in the Dashboard and sends a webhook, which needs developer work to route anywhere else. NoChargeback reads the warnings from your Stripe account and emails each one on every plan, and posts to Slack on Growth and higher, with the recommended action in the message.
Can NoChargeback refund Stripe payments automatically?
No. The restricted key asks for read access plus write access on disputes only, so NoChargeback cannot issue refunds. When a refund is advised, the alert opens the payment in Stripe and you refund there with one click.
